Since your car was new, dirt, varnishes, and carbon deposits have been forming in your vehicle's fuel system on the intake valves and in the combustion area. Deposits are formed after a car has been running for a period of time at normal operating temperature and is shut off. This time period is also called "Hot Soak." During Hot Soak, light fuel hydrocarbons evaporate, the remaining heavier hydrocarbon molecules oxidize and polymerize. These chemical reactions form gums and resins that bind with other particulate matter, such as air-born dirt and solids, which are usually left over from the combustion process. The particulates enter the intake manifold via the PCV and EGR systems and air that bypasses the air filter. Oil residue from internal engine components will also add to these deposits.
When the gums and resins bind with the particulate, deposits are formed. These buildups can rob your car of performance. Some of the symptoms related to carbon buildup are engine pinging, hesitation, poor acceleration, lack of power, repeated stalling when cold, poor performance when cold, rough idle, and poor fuel economy. These buildups, if left untreated, can lead to costly engine repairs.
